Haldoor

Discover Haldoor, the first pillar of the HAWADI leadership framework. Learn why being an unwavering, responsible decision-maker is crucial for succes

Haldoor: The First Pillar of the HAWADI Perspective

Welcome to Hawadiye’s civic platform...

Haldoor the first pillar of HAWADI prospective

Haldoor is the first attribute of the HAWADI philosophy, and it is the first and most crucial pillar of effective leadership. Linguistically in Somali, "Haldoor" means a decisive person, someone who does not hesitate, someone who reaches a decision in any situation.

Haldoornimadu (Decisiveness) isn't just about making a decision; it is making the right decision, at the appropriate time, based on data, and being ready to take responsibility for the outcome of that decision.

Why is Haldoornimo important?

1. Time is the life of the community

In the Somali Region and generally everywhere Somalis are, emergencies (droughts, conflicts, clan battles, elections, development projects) are frequent. A leader who cannot make quick decisions brings loss of life and wealth to their community.

2. People's trust depends on it

People follow someone they see can make decisions even when it is difficult, and who does not run away from responsibility.

3. Lack of decisiveness causes chaos

When a leader delays a decision or procrastinates, it begins that everyone makes their own individual decision → infighting, destruction, and lost opportunities.

Attributes of a True Haldoor

Attribute Description
Courage Being able to make a decision even amidst fear and threats.
Prudence Not rushed and not delayed – taken at the appropriate time.
Data Collection Reliable data is gathered before any decision.
Full Responsibility You own both the good and bad outcomes of the decision.
Consistency Once a decision is made, execute it; do not turn back without reason.
Justice/Fairness The decision cannot be one that favors a specific person or clan.

How to train yourself in Haldoornimo

  • 1
    Start with small decisions

Decide today: what you will eat, when you will sleep, and when you will wake up. Sticking to these small decisions builds the habit for you.

  • 2
    Decide after Istikhara

Pray Istikhara, then make a decision and do not hesitate.

  • 3
    Write down pros and cons

Write the advantages of the decision and potential disadvantages on paper – then decide.

  • 4
Seek an advisor, but the decision is yours

Consult experienced people, but ultimately the decision is yours.

  • 5
    When you decide, execute

No decision is often worse than a wrong decision.

Haldoor and the other pillars of HAWADI

Haldoor cannot work alone. To be complete leadership:

It must go with Aamin (Trust - people must trust you with your decision).

It must be based on Waayo-aragnimo (Experience - because without experience, Haldoor can be dangerous).

It must lead to Indheer-garadnimo (Vision - the decision must illuminate the future).

Conclusion

A leader without Haldoornimo is a leader that does not exist. Haldoor is the beating heart of HAWADI. Anyone wanting to be a true Hawadiye must start by becoming a Haldoor – a decision-maker who does not fear the responsibility of their decision, does not hesitate in justice, and does not delay the progress of their people.

Haldoor: Tiirka Koowaad ee HAWADI

Haldoor: Tiirka Koowaad ee HAWADI

Haldoor alifi kara Waayo-arag aamin ah Daadaheeye Indheer-garad ah waa lix tayo iyo tilmaamo gooni ku ah hogaanka wax-ku-oolka ah

Haldoor

Haldoor waa sifada koowaad ee falsafada HAWADI, waana tiirka ugu horreeya uguna muhiimsan ee hogaanka wax-ku-oolka ah. Erayga “Haldoor” luuqad ahaan af-Soomaaliga waxa uu macnaheedu yahay qof go’aan adag sameeya, qof aan ka labalabayn, qof xaalad kasta go’aan ku gaadha.

Haldoornimadu ma aha oo keliya in aad go’aan sameyso, ee waa in aad sameyso go’aan sax ah, waqti ku habboon, xog ku salaysan, oo aad diyaar u tahay in aad qaadatid masuuliyadda waxa ka yimaada go'aankaas.

Maxay Haldoornimadu muhiim u tahay?

1. Waqtigu waa nolosha bulshada

Deegaanka Soomaalida, xaaladaha degdegga ah (abaaro, colaado, doorashooyin) ayaa badan. Hogaamiyaha aan go’aanka degdeg u samayn karin wuxuu khasaare nafeed iyo mid maaliyadeedba u keenaa bulshadiisa.

2. Kalsoonida dadka

Dadku waxay raacaan qof ay arkaan in uu go’aan gaadhikaro xitaa marka ay adag tahay, ee uusan ka cararin masuuliyadda.

3. Haldoornimo la’aantu waa fowdo

Marka hogaamiye go’aan ka gaabiyo, waxaa bilaabata in qof kasta uu go’aan u gaar ah sameeyo → is-qabqabsi, burbur, iyo luminta fursado.

Astaamaha Haldoor dhabta ah

Astaanta Sharaxaad
Geesinimo In aad go’aan qaadan karto xitaa marka ay jiraan cabsi iyo hanjabaad.
Taxadar Aan lagu degdegin oo aan laga gaabin – waqti ku habboon ayaa la qaataa.
Xog-ururin Go’aan kasta ka hor, xog sugan ayaa la ururiyaa.
Masuuliyad buuxda Go’aanka wanaagsan iyo kan xunba adiga ayaa leh.
Joogtayn Go’aan la qaato waa la fuliyaa, dib looma noqdo sabab la’aan.
Caddaalad Go’aanku ma noqon karo mid qof ama beel gaar ah u hiilinaya.

Sida aad Haldoornimo ugu tababarto naftaada

  • 1
    Bilow go’aan yaryar

Maanta go’aan gaadh: waxa aad cuni doonto, goorta aad seexan doonto. Ku adkeysiga go’aanadan yaryar ayaa kuu dhisa caado.

  • 2
    Istikhara ka dib go’aan qaado

Tuko istikhara ka dib go’aan qaado oo ha ka labalabayn.

  • 3
    Qor faa’idooyinka iyo khasaaraha

Warqad ku qor faa’idooyinka iyo khasaaraha suurtagalka ah – ka dib go’aan qaado.

  • 4
Raadi lataliye laakiin go’aanka adigaa leh

Latasho Dadka waayo-arag ah, laakiin aakhirka go’aanka adigaa leh.

  • 5
    Marka aad go’aan qaadatid, fuli

Go’aan la’aan ayaa ka xun go’aan qaldan marar badan.

Haldoor iyo tiirarka kale

Haldoor keligiis ma shaqeyn karo. Si uu u noqdo hogaan dhamaystiran:

Waa in uu la socdaa Aamin (dadku in ay kugu aaminaan go’aankaaga). Waa in uu ku salaysnaadaa Waayo-aragnimo (waayo khibrad la’aan Haldoorku wuxuu noqon karaa qatar). Waa in uu horseedo Indheer-garadnimo (go’aanku waa in uu ifiyo mustaqbalka).

Gabagabo

Hogaamiyaha aan Haldoornimo lahayn waa hogaamiye aan jirin. Haldoor waa wadnaha garaaca ee HAWADI. Qof kasta oo doonaya in uu noqdo Hawadiye dhab ah, waa in uu bilaabaa in uu noqdo Haldoor – go’aan-qaate aan ka cabsan masuuliyadda go'aankiisa.

Listen Broadly, Act Selectively: A Principle for Civic Clarity and Leadership

Listen Broadly, Act Selectively

Listen Broadly, Act Selectively: A Principle for Civic Clarity and Leadership

True leadership is translating voices into action. Learn to Listen Broadly, Act Selectively and transform community narratives into focused, strategic civic change.

In a world overflowing with voices, data, and competing priorities, true leadership is not about hearing less — it’s about listening more, and then acting with precision. “Listen broadly, act selectively” is more than a phrase; it’s a discipline that transforms diverse stories into actionable strategies.

Broad Listening Builds Trust

Communities, teams, and institutions thrive when every voice is heard. By listening broadly, leaders demonstrate profound respect for diverse perspectives, capturing the full narrative without interruption or inherent bias. This radical inclusivity strengthens trust and ensures no critical insight is overlooked or lost in the noise of the system.

Selective Action Creates Impact

Acting selectively does not mean ignoring perspectives; it means expertly distilling what enriches the core mission. From the full, diverse narrative, effective leaders identify the elements that critically advance clarity, equity, and sustainable progress. Selective action is the essence of focus — turning an abundance of information into a limited set of high-leverage, actionable priorities.

From Noise to Guiding Narrative

Broad listening gathers the essential raw material: lived experiences, key frustrations, hard-won successes, and collective aspirations. Selective action then shapes that material into a coherent, guiding narrative that informs policy, documentation, or civic engagement campaigns. This principle acts as the crucial bridge between deep empathy and focused execution.

Practical Applications of the Principle

This discipline can be applied across all sectors to drive intentional progress:

  • In Health Facilities: Listen to the insights of clinical staff, patients, and administrators; act selectively on the workflows that fundamentally improve access and patient outcomes.
  • In Governance: Hear the full spectrum of community concerns and civic demands; act selectively on the systemic reforms that demonstrably strengthen equity and institutional transparency.
  • In Organizational Culture: Welcome and document diverse employee stories and experiences; act selectively on the practices that tangibly reinforce mutual trust, ethical conduct, and organizational pride.

Closing Reflection

Leadership in the modern era demands both radical openness and rigorous discipline. To listen broadly is to honor the richness and complexity of the human experience. To act selectively is to honor the serious responsibility of decision-making and resource allocation.

Together, Listen Broadly, Act Selectively forms a resilient principle that ensures civic life, institutions, and organizations are guided by clarity, driven by impact, and defined by resilience.

Every voice matters.
Every action must serve the mission.
Let’s build systems that honor both.

Gobonimo-Doon: Falanqayn ku Saabsan Dhisidda Dhaqanka gobonimo-doonka

Gobonimo-Doon: Falanqayn ku Saabsan dhisidda Dhaqanka gobonimo-doonka

Dr Mahamed Sirad Gobonimo-Doon ma aha wax lagu dhasho ee waa culture la aburo...

“Gobonimo-Doon Ma Aha Wax Lagu Dhasho — Ee Waa Culture La Abuuro”

— Dr. Maxamed Sirad, Wareysi TV (Sannado ka hor)

Dr Mahamed Sirad: Gobonimo-Doon ma aha wax lagu dhasho ee waa culture la aburo. Explore why the desire for freedom is a practice societies must cultivate.

Wareysi maqal iyo muuqaal ah oo qotodheer, oo laqaaday sannado ka hor, Dr. Maxamed Sirad wuxuu soo bandhigay aragti falsafadeed oo ku saabsan mabda'a xorriyadda. Halkudheggiisii, "Gobonimo-doon ma aha wax lagu dhasho — ee waa culture la abuuro," wuxuu caddaynayaa in hanka xorriyadda, ama Gobonimo-doon (fikradda ku-dadaalka sharaf iyo madax-bannaani qaran/bulsho), aanu ahayn sifo dabiici ah oo lagu dhasho, balse uu yahay hab-dhaqan u baahan in si miyir leh loo beero.

Dhisida Dhaqan Gobonimo-doon

Dhisidda dhaqan gobonimo-doon wuxuu u baahan yahay isku-duubni iyo dadaal wadajir ah. Dhismaha dhaqanka Gobonimo-doon ka ah waxaa lagu kobciyaa heerarka qiyamka ee la wadaago, ka-qaybgal siyaasadeed oo loo siman yahay, iyo hirgalinta nidaamyada dhisaya sharafta iyo himilooyinka guud. Dhismaha gobonimo-doon noocan oo kale ah wuxuu noqdaa anshax ma guurto ah — oo ah mid ay tahay in lagu dhex-daro waxbarashada, qaab-dhismeedka bulshada, iyo ilaalinta joogtada ah ee jiilalka dambe.

Ka-gudubka Falceliska Una-gudub Dhismaha Nidaamka

Aragtida Dr. Sirad waxay dhiirigelisaa in laga guuro fikirka falceliska fudud ee jawaabta u ah cadaalad-darrada. Taasi beddelkeeda, baaqiisu waa in la sameeyo isbeddel qoto dheer oo ku wajahan abuurista. Dhisidda dhaqan gobonimo-doon oo u baahan maalgelin joogto ah oo lagu sameeyo waxbarashada aasaasiga ah, maamulka, iyo qaab-dhismeedka bulsho ee xoojinaya is-maamulka iyo wadajirka. Tusaale kor-uqaadida maalgalinta manhajka carruurta ee baraya falanqaynta fikradaha muhiimka ah(curinta iyo hal-abuurka) iyo taariikhda deegaanka, si loo dhiso madax-bannaanida maskaxeed ee lagama maarmaanka u ah dhaqanka gobonimo-doonka.

Saamaynta Hoggaanka iyo Naqshadaynta Nidaamka

Waajibaadkan dhaqameed wuxuu caddaynayaa mas'uuliyadda culus ee saaran shakhsiyaadka haysta awoodda iyo saamaynta bulshada. Hoggaamiyeyaasha, barayaasha, iyo xirfadlayaasha war-baahinta waxay leeyihiin door qeexaya qaabaynta dhaqankan. Laga soo bilaabo isticmaalka luqadda ee doodaha guud ilaa naqshadaynta hay'adaha, faahfaahin kasta waxay si toos ah u saamayn kartaa horumarka ama hoos u dhaca gobonimo-doonka. Cadaynta istiraatiijiyadeed ma ahan doorasho fudud ee waa dhaqan gobonimo-doon.

Gunaanad iyo Baaq Waxqabad oo Joogto Ah

Xigashada Dr. Sirad waa baaq waxqabad oo joogto ah, ma ahan aragti kaliya. Waa inaan si adag isku weydiinnaa: Dhaqan noocee ah ayaynu hadda dhisaynaa? Nidaamyadeena maamulka ma yihiin kuwo daah-furan, oo ku salaysan awood-siinta bulshada?

Gobonimo-Doon: A Cultural Call to Action

Gobonimo-Doon: A Cultural Call to Action

Dr Mahamed Sirad Gobonimo-Doon ma aha wax lagu dhasho ee waa culture la aburo...

Dr. Mahamed Sirad: "Gobonimo-Doon ma aha wax lagu dhasho ee waa culture la abuuro." Explore why the desire for freedom is a practice societies must cultivate.

Gobonimo-Doon: A Cultural Call to Action

— Dr. Mahamed Sirad

“Gobonimo-Doon Ma Aha Wax Lagu Dhasho — Ee Waa Culture La Abuuro”

— Dr. Mahamed Sirad, TV Interview (Years Ago)

Some years ago, in a televised interview that continues to resonate, Dr. Mahamed Sirad offered a profound reframing of freedom. His words — “Gobonimo-doon ma aha wax lagu dhasho ee waa culture la abuuro” — remind us that the desire for freedom, or Gobonimo-doon (the pursuit of dignity and self-determination), is not something we’re born with, but something we must intentionally cultivate.

Gobonimo-Doon as a Cultural Practice

This vital pursuit demands an active, collective effort. The desire for freedom is nurtured through shared values, inclusive participation, and the deliberate shaping of systems that reflect dignity and collective aspiration. Gobonimo-doon becomes a living ethic — one that must be taught, practiced, and protected across generations.

From Reaction to Creation

Moving from theory to daily practice, Dr. Sirad’s framework requires a profound shift in mindset. Too often, societies respond to injustice with reactive resistance. Dr. Sirad’s framing invites a deeper shift: from reaction to creation. Building a culture of gobonimo-doon means investing in education, storytelling, participatory governance, and community rituals that reinforce autonomy and mutual respect. For instance, a curriculum that teaches children critical thinking and local history, rather than rote memorization, actively cultivates the intellectual autonomy necessary for freedom.

The Role of Leadership and Design

This cultural mandate places a high responsibility on those in positions of influence and power. Leaders, educators, and communicators play a vital role in shaping this culture. From the language used in public discourse to the way institutions are organized, every detail can either reinforce or erode the desire for freedom. Strategic clarity, cultural resonance, and accessible design are not luxuries — they are tools of liberation.

A Timeless Call to Action

Dr. Sirad’s quote is more than a reflection — it’s a call to action. What kind of culture are we building today? Are our systems inclusive, transparent, and empowering? Are we cultivating gobonimo-doon in our schools, communities, and leadership circles — not just in theory, but in practice?

Beyond ABC Medicine: Reframing Reactive Culture

Beyond ABC Medicine: Reframing Reactive Culture

Shift public health culture from reactive ABC (blaming) to strategic ACT (Acknowledge, Co-create, Transform). Design systems that truly heal.

Beyond ABC Medicine: Reframing Reactive Culture in Public Health Systems

Organizational Culture & Systems Thinking

In many institutions—especially within public health systems—we often reach for a familiar prescription when tensions rise or outcomes fall short: ABC Medicine.

  • A = Accusation
  • B = Blaming
  • C = Criticising

When teams or leaders feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or under pressure, reacting with ABC can feel satisfying, like “finally saying what needed to be said.” This kind of catharsis may release tension, but it rarely heals. Instead, it:

  • Releases tension without resolving it
  • Creates defensiveness instead of dialogue, making people hide future errors
  • Distracts from root causes and systemic fixes

  • When we default to ABC, we treat symptoms—not systems.

What If We Saw the Bigger Picture?

Let’s reimagine ABC not as a medicine, but as a mirror. What if we created the psychological safety to look deeper?

Old ABC (Reactive) New ABC (Reflective & Strategic)
A: Accusation A: Acknowledgement: Recognizing process gaps without personal attacks
B: Blaming B: Building: Co-creating solutions instead of assigning fault
C: Criticising C: Collaboration: Engaging diverse voices rather than tearing down efforts

This shift isn't just semantic; it’s strategic. It moves the focus from who made the mistake to what allowed the mistake to happen.

Concrete Example | Systems vs. Symptoms

For instance, when a critical failure occurs in a lab system, the reactive ABC response leads to a leader firing a technician. Conversely, the reframed ABC response involves leaders Acknowledging the systemic vulnerability, Building a better protocol with the team, and Collaborating with IT to implement new checks. This systemic approach is the only one that prevents recurrence.

From Reactive to Reflective: A Call to ACT

We need a proactive, visible reminder of this new culture. Imagine a dashboard header or folder label that reads:

    From ABC to ACT:

    Acknowledge · Co-create · Transform

This isn't just a slogan. It’s a call to leadership and a reminder that every Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), every indicator, and every stakeholder summary is an opportunity to move from critique to clarity—from blame to blueprint. The shift requires us to Acknowledge what went wrong, Co-create a new process, and ultimately Transform the entire system to prevent future failures.

    Final Thought

Let’s stop prescribing ABC Medicine. Let’s start designing systems that heal—through insight, inclusion, and impact. The shift begins when we consciously choose to Acknowledge, Co-create, and Transform our culture.

The choice is ours: Will we treat symptoms or heal the system?

    • Waayo Arag (Experienced): The elders’ collective wisdom is invaluable. Their experience navigates complex social dynamics, ensuring that policies align closely with the community’s unique needs and realities.

Key Themes Through the HAWADI Lens

The recent dialogue highlighted several critical themes, viewed through the lens of HAWADI principles:

    1. Peace and Unity: Strengthening ties across diverse zones builds a crucial foundation of trust and respect. This embodies the Aamin quality, critical for cohesive advancement throughout the region.
    2. Development and Growth: Recognizing significant infrastructural progress while actively addressing existing gaps reflects the Waayo Arag principle of sustainability and the Haldoor’s commitment to adaptive problem-solving. 3. Institutional Capacity Building: Enhancing governance structures and public services aligns directly with the Alife Initiator’s drive for reform and the Indheer Garad’s vision for robust, effective institutions that serve all citizens.

    Why This Matters

This dialogue underscores the profound power of combining traditional wisdom with modern governance. Elders, as revered custodians of cultural knowledge, play a pivotal role. They mediate disputes, guide policy, and ensure that development initiatives truly resonate with community needs and cultural values. This holistic approach—rooted deeply in inclusive dialogue and active listening—defines HAWADI leadership. It sets a progressive model for transforming existing challenges into tangible opportunities for lasting peace and prosperity in the Somali Region.

Enhancing: Actionable Improvements Through HAWADI Principles

To maximize the impact and sustainability of HAWADI leadership, the following actionable improvements are proposed:

    • Establish Regular Forums: Create consistent, regular forums for elders and leaders to ensure continuous input into decision-making. This will enhance responsiveness to emerging challenges and foster ongoing collaboration.
    • Launch Targeted Training Programs: Implement specific training programs for local leaders. These will accelerate project implementation and ensure fair and equitable resource distribution across all zones.
    • Create a Formal Advisory Council: Form a formal advisory council composed of elders. This body would provide ongoing, structured guidance, preserving their invaluable expertise in critical policy development processes.
    • Develop Community-Led Transparency Initiatives: Introduce initiatives like public reporting on development projects. This will reinforce trust and accountability, allowing communities to see tangible progress.
    • Implement Structured Feedback Mechanisms: Establish mechanisms such as regular community surveys. This ensures continuous learning and allows for the iterative refinement of policies based on direct citizen feedback.
    • Form a Long-Term Strategic Planning Committee: Create a committee dedicated to long-term strategic planning. This body will align development goals with the region’s unique cultural and social vision, ensuring sustainable and culturally sensitive growth.

    Moving Forward: Sustaining Momentum

To build on the success of this historic gathering, the Somali Region can focus on these key areas:

    • Amplify the Message: Share outcomes broadly through local media and digital platforms to inspire wider public engagement. This encourages Alife Initiators to foster broader participation and awareness among all segments of society.
      • Improvement: Partner with local influencers and youth groups to amplify messaging, ensuring diverse demographics are engaged and informed about these vital initiatives.
    • Engage in Policy Advocacy: Sustain open dialogue between leaders and communities. This reinforces the Haldoor’s role in facilitating transparent governance and the Aamin’s unwavering commitment to trust and mutual respect.
      • Improvement: Host quarterly town halls across different zones to maintain open communication channels and address community concerns promptly and effectively.
    • Support Local Initiatives: Invest strategically in programs that strengthen unity and infrastructure at the grassroots level. This empowers Daadaheeye leaders to drive meaningful progress within their local communities.
      • Improvement: Create micro-grant programs for community-driven projects, specifically prioritizing initiatives that promote unity, local development, and sustainable practices. (Find out more about Framework: Classifying the "Hawadi Lead" Qualities).

    A Vision for the Future

This gathering is not merely a moment in time but a foundational blueprint for sustainable peace and progress in the Somali Region. By deeply embracing the HAWADI principles—ethical leadership, inclusive collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to growth, further enhanced by these actionable improvements—the Somali Region is actively forging a brighter, more unified future for its people.
